TEDxDelft Salon: Derk-Jan Karrenbeld – Alone in the light

Humans have a remarkable quality over all other species. We have the ability to inflict fear upon ourselves. When we’re young, most of us are afraid of the things that live under our beds, but as we grow up we usually stop being scared as we know that there’s nothing hiding. It’s Ignorance that feeds our fears and the things we do not understand are almost instinctively seen as dangerous or scary. We try to find the knowledge to get out of the dark so we can stop fearing the unknown. But once we get to the light, it can be very lonely.

Derk-Jan Karrenbeld studies Computer Science and likes developing Games, teaching himself to play the piano and perform dance entertainment in clubs and on stages. He was diagnosed with a rare form of Hodgkin lymphoma the day 18th birthday and has been living with it since. You will enter the world of hospitalization and live through the days of solitude. Experience the fears as a patient, a parent, a friend or an outsider. It’s about finding truth and understanding that doesn’t give closure; how others will run for the darkness instead of standing there with you; but mostly how to love living again.

This TEDxDelft Salon is on 24 April in TU Delft Library. If you want to attend, pleased register at https://www.facebook.com/events/485593474815484/
